Starting tomorrow I am starting the Country Music Genome Project. This project’s mission is to discover the governing principles of country music and determine how it communicates with the cell structures of your average cowboy/cowgirl and how it can be responsible for illnesses such as the circulation problems that result from tight wranglers.
Scientific Method
One thing that Preston mentioned today that I’ve also wondered about is if we (in a general sense) like the music we listen to because its what we like, or if we like it because its what we listen to. Some can present the opinion that we like the music we listen to simply because we listen to it and not because we truly find aesthetic elements that we respond positively to. We for instance might begin listening to something because our environment and circumstances forces us to, and we end up liking that kind of music because of positive reinforcement.
That is why I will donate myself to science during the next calender week and listen only to country music. And of course I do like some forms of country, like John Prine and Gillian Welch, so I will have to stick with those elements of country that are not familiar to me and so will cause discomfort.
Purpose
I’m sincerely going to try to throw all of my prejudices away and use myself as litmus paper to see if I am a product of my environment or if my environment is a product of me. I was going to use gangsta rap, but I was afraid of the psychological reprocusions. Yes, yes, like for instance slapping around my bitches. There, I read your mind.
Hypothesis
This element of the scientific method is going to be impossible to include. If I decide on a hypothesis, I will be forming an opinion about what will happen. If I form an opinion, it will discredit the results because I am the test subject.
Control
Ok, well I think I will finally admit that there is no control, so this experiment really doesn’t follow the scientific method. I’m working with limited resources here.
Stay Tuned
I’m going to put a real effort into blogging about this everyday. This in itself is a bit of a science project since you, my faithful reader, know that I suck at writing on a regular basis.
